"GET OVER IT!" Her brain shrieked at her heart.
Her heartbreak was palpable; nonsensical, irrational, brutal, so real she could taste it. It was sour acid. It devastated her taste buds the way Sun Protection Factor in discount lip balm did. Acrid, bitter, metallic.
It had nearly been a year since they had even been in the same room. A month since they had last muddled through one of the awkward text-message minefields. The exchanges where they mimicked friendship maintenance across the distance. The conversations that seemed to deliberately avoid his relationship. The relationship he had withheld from her, and never acknowledged, in a way that confused her even now.
Was there ever something between them or was she as deluded as she feared?
Destined to live a life only full of painful unrequited love and misunderstandings she switched off the lamp and rolled over. The tear slid to the pillow as she started drifting off.
