Pain. Sharp and Raw. Recoil. She crumbled. Tears stung her eyes and her skin as they glided down her inflamed cheek. When she finally lifted her eyes to find his he was gone. In the depth of shock she hadn't been aware of him leaving.
They'd been together for twenty months now and this was the first he had snapped in anger and the only time she hadn't ever seen him violent. A literal slap in the face wasn't the reaction she had expected. After all the situation was partially his. He had always initiated he didn't want fatherhood. He had been very upfront regarding that. So much so it stunned her on their first date when he brought that topic up pre-dessert. Very bluntly stated that he was looking for love but not a family. He'd claimed that he knew himself well enough to factor out parenthood. She hadn't been certain then if it could be what she would desire of life.
As the time together grew she'd come to enjoy the time alone together and saw how with all of his travel and interests he was perhaps too young at heart to raise children. A bit too selfish for that sort of sacrificial situation.
She herself was now only working very part-time because he wanted her company in Europe and India. She was his and didn't much mind.
And knowing him as well as she did, when the birth control failed, she had done what she figured would disrupt his existence the least.
And now the hospital bill lay splayed open on the bed.and she sat slumped on the floor, feeling equally disheveled.
